Brent's Music Picks: David Bromberg Quintet

The musical pedigree of David Bromberg is unassailable. His label, Red House Records, points out that the American music icon known as Dr. John has called Bromberg an American music icon. He’s one of the progenitors of the Americana genre of music, as the musicians he’s worked with – Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris, Bonnie Raitt, The Eagles and many more – can attest.

Bromberg is a regular visitor to Higher Ground in South Burlington, and Sunday’s concert with his quintet will show off songs from his latest and 18th album, “The Blues, The Whole Blues and Nothing But The Blues,” which comes out Friday. Another of those Americana acolytes, Levon Helm crony Larry Campbell, produced the album, which features Bromberg’s take on songs by Robert Johnson, Ray Charles and Sonny Boy Williamson, among others.

“The Blues, The Whole Blues and Nothing But the Blues” mixes acoustic and electric sounds, as should Sunday’s show. The fans in attendance will have the chance to sit on the edge of their seats, as Bromberg’s concert is the rare seated show in Higher Ground’s Ballroom.

8 p.m. Sunday, David Bromberg Quintet, Higher Ground Ballroom, South Burlington. $27 in advance, $30 day of show. 652-0777, www.highergroundmusic.com.
